Water Skiing Rules

Water skiing has developed into a recreational sport over the years and is one of the most thrilling ways to enjoy the waves. Travelling over water on these water skis, being towed by a boat is no child play. Exceptional body strength and good balance are required for you to master this water sport. You can enjoy this sport in number of ways; from a ski tow or behind a towboat, on one ski or two, but to perfect this technique you have to take care of few rules for your safety and happy skiing experience.

Fundamentals
The first basic rule is that you always wear a life jacket irrespective of your swimming knowledge. Always stay out of congested areas, shores and fishing zones so that you do not collide with other boats. Check your towline and maintain a safe speed all time.

Follow the correct procedure

You need to learn the correct procedure of skiing before you hit the water. Pull on the life vest and fix the skis and first start floating on the water on your back with your knees pulled into your chest. Grab the handle tightly and pull the rope keeping some slack.
The driver of the boat will put it into neutral mode until your rope is really pulled tight. You need to shout “gear” to the driver and he will shift to the idle mode till you again shout “go boat”. This is a signal for the driver to pull you up hard and you can start skiing.

Your equipments and speed

It is must for the boat operator to judge the boat speed according to the ability of the skier. The maximum speed limits for boats towing skiers must be followed.

Also make sure your equipment is safe. Foot bindings with sharp surfaces can prove to be harmful. Many skiers have met with serious accidents because of the ski equipment or tow boat fault. Attach towlines of equal lengths if more than one person is skiing. Check your towline strength for every season. As a team the skier, boat operator and the observer are the three main people involved in water skiing.

You can also try to use a ski tube while being towed by the boat.

Board Material

The two common materials for making the board are honeycomb and foam.

Honeycomb boards are light and fast. They allow a rider to move faster and jump high but are not suitable for rough water conditions.

Foam Liquid Force wakeboards are more stable and suitable for rough water conditions. Their flexibility allows you to manoeuvre the board better. You cannot however, jump very high.
